About The Project

Truth be told, the San Francisco Bay Area wasn't a huge pirate stomping ground. There was a Frenchman tho, Hippolyte de Bouchard, who raided the Presidio of Monterey in 1818. The revolutionary has been called California's only pirate. Black sails were also pretty much non-existent. Johnny Depp's "the Black Pearl" would have been spotted from a long distance and avoided at all costs.

Most wanted to disguise themselves as merchants. Pirates often used red and black "Jolly Roger" flags which were uniquely decorated. The images depicted on the flags usually symbolized death, skull and cross bones, etc. They had many different flags and regularly sailed under false colors.

So why a Pirate Ship at the Bay Bridge? Perhaps a lost ghost ship? Little known fact, there are many ships actually buried under San Francisco. I stumbled onto this interesting article that is worth reading...

Lastly, Isn't art about the interpretation as well as the work itself? Talk amongst yourselves… or maybe I'll share my thoughts one day.
